GOMEZ RETURNS
Fiorentina are set to welcome Mario Gomez back into the team. The German international was the major summer signing of the club, but he has not played for the last couple of months. He was injured in the middle of September while playing against Cagliari. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but Vincenzo Montella was handed a bigger setback in the form of Gomez’ injury. After two months on the sidelines, he is set to return to first-team action sooner rather than later.
This will be a massive boost for the club, who are on the edges of the top three positions. They are close to taking advantage of Napoli’s poor form, which has seen them slip to third position in the table. Meanwhile, Fiorentina have been slowly picking up points that was not the case at this stage last season. As a result, they missed out on the Champions league in the final round. The return of Gomez should help them sustain this form even after the winter break. It is expected that the striker will be back for the weekend’s match against Hellas Verona.
“The Germany forward will therefore gradually begin training again with the rest of the squad,” said doctor Francesco Giron.
After several seasons at Bayern Munich during which time he won many trophies including the Champions league last season, Gomez is expected to be Italian Serie A’s top scorer this campaign. The 28-year-old has made just three appearances for the club this campaign, but he has already scored two goals in these matches. They are currently fifth in the table with a match against Udinese. This will be a tough test for the team especially without the services of Gomez, who is expected to partner Giuseppe Rossi when he returns from injury in the next few days.
