GOMEZ: GERMANY SENIOR TEAM CAREER EXAMINED
Mario Gomez scored 31 goals in 78 appearances for the German senior national team including a goal on his debut. The ex-VfB Stuttgart and Bayern Munich attacker was in the German senior team for a period of eleven (11) years. Gomez was in the senior national team from 2007 to 2018.
For his second appearance, Mario Gomez came on as a second half substitute for Kevin Kuranyi and he went on to score a brace as Germany beat San Marino 6-0 in a UEFA Euro 2008 qualifier.
Gomez made his first appearance for the German senior team at a major tournament at Euro 2008. He was in the starting team for the group stage games as Low broke the tried and tested strike partnership between Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose for him. He lost his place in the starting XI for the knockout stages as he was wasteful in front of goal during the Germans’ group stage campaign.
Mario Gomez was a spectator for the majority of the knockout stages until the final. He came on as a substitute for Klose in the second half but he was unable to prevent his team from losing 1-0 to Spain in the final. Fernando Torres scored the lone goal as Spain ended over four decades of wait for a major trophy.
German striker Gomez was part of the squad to three European Championships. Apart from Euro 2008, he also featured at both Euro 2012 and Euro 2016. He was also at the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament in South Africa and the last World Cup tournament in Russia.
