The MLS is a possible destination for Fiorentina’s Mario Gomez
Mario Gomez has gone from being a regular player in Bayern Munich and winning Bundesliga titles to turning into an unused substitute for Fiorentina. In 2 seasons, Gomez has made a total of 29 appearances for the Italian outfit Fiorentina and it has become clear that Gomez does not play an important role for Fiorentina and might not ever will.
Having only scored 4 goals in 20 Serie A appearances for Fiorentina, Vincenzo Montella does not have faith in Gomez and it’s staying to become more evident from what has happened in the past few months where Gomez has only been able to make 2 appearances from the last 8 matches of Fiorentina.
Gomez has a contract with Fiorentina which extends until 2017 but he being rumored of making a move to the American League, the MLS.
The New York Red Bulls and New York City FC are the clubs of the MLS that Gomez is being linked with but the German forward might be just too far away from the reach of the American clubs.
When Gomez signed with Fiorentina on July of 2013, the Italian club had to pay a transfer fee in the region of €20 million in order to secure his services. This is a fairly high price for a club such as Fiorentina, they are not known for their spending power and even though €20 million isn’t such a high price for clubs such as: Manchester City or Real Madrid, it’s still pretty steep for Fiorentina.
The Italian club wants to recoup all of that money that was spent in signing Mario Gomez and by letting him go then they wouldn’t be able to do so unless they sell him for a price above €20 million but it seems incredibly unlikely that any club from the MLS will spent that much money in a player who is almost 30 years old and has struggled trying to score goals.
