Fiorentina defeated Hotspur to reach Champions League
Fiorentina took a major step towards reaching the Champions League via the Europa League competition after managing to defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on two legs in the knockout stages.
After a 1-1 draw in the first leg, Fiorentina were feeling confident that they can complete the job in front of their own supporters. Mario Gomez, who has been suffering from numerous injuries of late, turned out to be the hero of the second leg. He scored the club’s first goal in the 54th minute, while Chelsea’s on loan winger Mohamed Salah confirmed the victory with a 74th minute goal.
The arrival of Salah has been a major reason behind the recent spring in the step for Fiorentina. They have been able to close the gap to third placed Napoli. Another victory this weekend when they take on Inter Milan will eliminate one of their rivals for the Champions League spots. Gomez is almost certain to lead the line up and he is certainly benefiting from the presence of Salah. The Egyptian winger has been a breath of fresh air and he has already scored three goals in four league matches. Gomez says that the victory over Tottenham is a major statement of intent and he believes that the club can reach the final and possibly win it.
“Can we reach the Final? We’ve made a big step forward and now we must await our next opponents, but we want to win that too.I am very happy for the fans and for the whole city. Our negative moments are now behind us, and I feel good and am playing well. We’re still in Europe and that is what matters. We are playing like a team.We must continue along this path now, and try not to drop points like we did against Torino,” said Gomez.
